  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: Makes approximately 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 7 oz cream cheese
  • Optional: Fruit preserves or fresh berries for topping

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, mix warm milk with yeast; let it sit until foamy.
  2. Combine the egg and yeast mixture with the dry ingredients to form a dough. Knead until smooth and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Prepare a butter block by pounding cold butter into an 8-inch square and chill.
  4. Roll out the dough, place the butter block in the center, and fold to seal. Roll into a long rectangle and fold into thirds. Chill; repeat this two more times.
  5. Cut dough into squares, fill with cream cheese mixture, shape as desired, and allow to rise for an hour before baking at 390°F for 15–20 minutes.
  6. Cool and glaze with powdered sugar mixed with milk or lemon juice.
